Cars24 Scraps Job Titles To Align With An AI-Driven Workplace
Cars24 has removed hierarchy across the company, with new Flatland model, to redesign its workplace for the AI era.
Cars24 has removed traditional job titles, grades, and organisational levels across the company, replacing them with a new operating model called ‘Flatland’ as it redesigns its workplace for the AI era.
Under the new structure, all employees will be known as builders, with authority determined by ownership, execution and customer impact rather than hierarchical position. The company said that the transition has been rolled out in phases over the past several months, starting with senior leadership before expanding across the organisation.
The move comes as companies increasingly rethink conventional organisational structures in response to the growing role of artificial intelligence in decision-making and collaboration. Cars24 believes AI has reduced the need for information to flow through multiple layers of management, allowing teams closer to a problem to make faster decisions.
“Hierarchy was one of humanity’s greatest inventions. It helped organisations scale when information was scarce. AI fundamentally changes that equation,” said Vikram Chopra, Builder at Cars24. “The role of an organisation is no longer to move decisions up and down layers. It’s to help exceptional people solve exceptional problems together.”
As part of the restructuring, the company has done away with employee bands and grades. At the same time, policies related to travel, reimbursements, IT assets and benefits will no longer be linked to organisational rank. Instead, they will be based on role requirements, compensation where applicable, and common employee benefits. New hires will also join the company as Builders instead of being assigned a level or designation.
Cars24 clarified that the new model does not eliminate accountability. Employees will continue to have clearly defined responsibilities, performance expectations and decision-making authority, with leadership driven by expertise and execution rather than formal titles.
According to the company, it has been redesigning its operating model over the past 18 months. During the second half of FY26, it recorded a 50% year-on-year increase in revenue per employee while adding nearly 300 basis points to EBITDA without a proportional increase in operating costs.
Founded as a used-car marketplace, Cars24 has since expanded into an AI-powered automotive platform spanning vehicle discovery, financing, servicing and ownership. The company operates across India, the UAE and Australia, serves more than 41 million monthly active users, and said it achieved global profitability this year.
